Goodnight Moon by Margaret Wise Brown
Title: We read Goodnight Moon every night for a long time.
Goodnight Moon, written by Margaret Wise Brown and illustrated by Clement Hurd, was originally published in 1947 by Harper & Row, Inc.
I personally began reading this book to my children when they were babies although the intended age range is age 1 -4. There is a sweet rhythm to its words, and the illustrations engage the reader into a room of warmth and rest which is perfect for bedtime with young children.
This book is written from the perspective of a little bunny in bed as it tries to wind down its mind for sleep. It’s a tribute to the restless mind as bunny lets the reader know about everything in the room and “a quiet old lady who was whispering “hush”. Then proceeds to say goodnight to everything in the room even though there is a “a quiet old lady who was whispering “hush”, then finally…
It's about the battle of the mind at bedtime which has a good lesson for all readers. I personally believe that the message is clear. It’s ok to take time to unwind. There will always be “noises” and distractions but if you just walk through them in your mind, take note, then shut it down.
My children always say, “Awwwwww” about Goodnight Moon even today when they are not babies any longer. It is a favorite in our family.
Tip: After your child’s bedtime bath, settle in with a good stack of books and read to them and let Goodnight Moon be at the top of this stack.
