Theodor Geisel wrote this book at the age of 53, the same age as the Grinch in the story. It is
said that it was easiest book to write of his career.

This edition of the book just adds to the simplicity of How the Grinch Stole Christmas. We
know the classic story. The Grinch hates Christmas and he hates how the Whos celebrate it. The
biggest thing he hates is their singing. UGH!!!! He has had to put up with it for 53 years and he
devises a plan to “STOP” Christmas.

He dresses up like “Santa Claus” and goes house to house stealing everything pertaining to
Christmas. Little Cindy Lou who is only 2 in the book catches him doing it and he lies about it.
The Grinch gets to the top of the mountain and awaits the cry of nothing for Christmas.
He was in for surprise.

The Whos sing and they sing louder and louder. The Grinch finally
realizes it isn’t in things, but it is something that is about the heart. The Grinch’s heart grows 3x
in size that day. He returns everything and celebrates Christmas with the people of WhoVille.

This edition has some extras that get the children involved and get them into the spirit of
Christmas. The book was adapted into a cartoon (1966) that was basically an exact copy of the
book only in cartoon form. It is narrated by Boris Karloff. The song: You’re A Mean One, Mr.
Grinch performed by Thurl Ravenscroft is awesome. I love it!!!

Not a huge fan of the live action: How the Grinch Stole Christmas with Jim Carrey as the
Grinch with Ron Howard directing (2000).
But I am a huge, huge fan of The Grinch (2018 - animated) voiced by Benedict Cumberbatch of
Sherlock and the dragon Smaug fame. So, who doesn’t love a classic. The children will enjoy it.
The story itself is written in a lyrical way, because there is a lot of rhyming. My children who are

tween and teen love when I read this out loud for a family read aloud. The Color added to the
illustrations just add to the already great story.

Christmas really isn’t about the gifts or the food. It’s about the Greatest Gift of All, Jesus Christ
who came into this world to save a wretched sinner like me and you. The story doesn’t mention
any of this but looks at the fact that Christmas is about family and the heart for Christmas.
5 out of 5 Stars
