Diary of A Wimpy Kid
by Jeff Kinney

Were you wimpy in Middle School. I was! The first book in Diary of A Wimpy Kid Series doesn’t disappoint.

Diary of a Wimpy Kid written by Jeff Kinney.

Publisher: AMULET an imprint of ABRAMS on April 1, 2007. Pages: 218

It is written in a journal format with cartoon animation on almost every page.

We are introduced to Greg Heffley who is a middle Schooler.

He records for us his school year.

There are the proverbial pranks that middle schoolers play on each other. Greg has a best friend, Rowley. He doesn’t really treat him as a best friend though.

Greg really is all about Greg. He is always conniving and being mean to his little brother, Manny. His mom and dad do catch him in his disobedience and bullying Manny, that he is given the appropriate punishment. Good. He deserved it. He also has an older brother, Rodrick, who is in “rock band” called Löded Diper. Pretty lame.

Middle School humor throughout the entire book. Greg doesn’t really care for his teachers and is disrespectful at times to them. He talks of the Christmas play, getting out of pre-Algebra while being a “crossing guard” for the Kindergartners. That becomes a disaster and he hurts Rowley in the process until he confesses that he was culprit in a certain complaint and Rowley is reinstated with a promotion.

He is unthankful when Christmas comes, because he didn’t get what he wanted and someone else got his gift by accident. He winds up with a red sweater.

I thought the book funny and I love the style that it is written in and the cartoon illustrations. A very quick and easy read.

The running “joke” is the CHEESE that is on the basketball court. Without giving it away, it is a moldy piece of cheese that eventually is ________________________.

The Professor’s Commentary

Church is mentioned briefly, but in the context of giving to those in need and when Greg is in church looking at the boys and girls that Rodrick has given names to in his (Rodrick’s) school yearbook.

Greg journals the ups and downs in middle school. Some of us have probably experienced some of these same experiences. It is relatable. Greg just needs to obey and be kind to others. Greg is extremely selfish, but aren’t we all. Without Christ I would continue in my own selfishness. But with Christ in my life, I can be kind to others. I can love my neighbor.

I give the book 3 out of 5 stars
